Common TMJ Symptoms

The symptoms of TMJ dysfunction can vary greatly between patients. TMJ symptoms often mask themselves or are similar to those of other medical conditions, making diagnosis extremely difficult. Common symptoms of TMJ disorder include:

  • Headaches, especially upon waking
  • Shoulder, neck, facial pain
  • Clicking or popping when opening or closing jaw
  • Locked jaw or limited mobility in the jaw joint
  • Teeth clenching, teeth grinding, often accompanied by tooth wear
  • Chronic earaches

Oral Appliance Therapy for TMJ

An oral appliance is a removable device that helps to keep the teeth and jaw in proper position during sleep and prevent teeth grinding or clenching. Prolonged teeth grinding or clenching can lead to tooth wear and contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.

If you are diagnosed with TMJ disorder, Dr. Marckese may create a customized oral appliance that is specially designed for you and help to alleviate your symptoms.

Treating the Effects of TMJ Disorders

Dr. Marckese also provides a range of services to repair teeth that have been damaged as a result of TMJ dysfunction. Restorative treatments may include dental bonding, porcelain veneers, dental crowns, inlays or onlays.

  • DentalSpa is terrific. The staff is so welcoming and knowledgeable. They explain everything very thoroughly, and in terms you can understand. They are very up-to-date with all of their equipment and knowledge, to give you the best dental care possible. It is a relaxing environment; that really makes you feel like you're having a spa day instead of a dentist appointment. I always look forward to my appointments.
